Used mainly to power small devices such as mobile phones and laptop computers, lithium-ion batteries are highly valued for their limited size and weight, low self-discharge rate, and absence of the 'memory effect', which led Mastervolt to ask the question: could this technology be applied to more demanding applications? What about on board a large yacht, a modern sailing yacht, or a motorhome with sensitive systems on board? After an extensive R&D programme, the answer was emphatic: YES.
Ultra lithium-ion batteries contain high energy density and are perfect for cyclic applications. They offer savings of up to 70% in space and weight compared with traditional lead-acid batteries, and three times more charge cycles (2000 full cycles).
Two factors determine the amount of usable energy a battery can supply: charge/discharge efficiency and the permissible depth of discharge (DOD), a factor that can dramatically reduce battery life. Mastervolt lithium-ion batteries are up to 15% more efficient than traditional acid batteries.
Another major benefit of Mastervolt lithium-ion batteries is that they include a Battery Management System (BMS), which automatically compensates for any imbalance between the cells that make up the battery. This guarantees a high continuous capacity and a longer system service life.
